Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Timberline Review! As an all-volunteer journal, supported by Willamette Writers — a volunteer-run organization — we know that volunteers are vital to our success. We could not make this journal without you!

Below is a list of possible journal positions. We ask that you express which positions you are interested in at the end of the form.

Remember, in order to volunteer for the Timberline Review, you must be a member of Willamette Writers.

Volunteer Positions at the Timberline Review

Editor-in-Chief – Member of the Willamette Writers’ Board of Directors &/or Officer of Willamette Writers. Currently, Maren Bradley Anderson. Handles all EiC duties, including approving the journal at each step along the way, managing the editors, reviewing processes, responding to staff questions, assisting where necessary, and ensuring the journal is up to standards and run properly.

Business Manager – Same as Willamette Writers’ Business Manager. Currently, Jack Burgess. He handles all the money and control the passwords/permissions for Dropbox, Submittable, printer, website, etc.

Associate Editor-in-Chief – Volunteer with experience as a lower editor to assist EiC. Highest volunteer position possible. Only for those volunteers who have shown dedication to TR and an ability to meet deadlines. Works with EiC.

Submissions Editor – This person will handle Submittable, start the submissions process, close submissions on time, and then will review all submissions for compliance with Submission Guidelines. Any that do not comply with the Submission Guidelines will be rejected by the Submissions Editor. The remainder will be compiled by the Submissions Editor and send to the appropriate Editors.

Editors – Six total, one person per genre (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, scripts, visual arts, and critical commentary). They will receive the submissions for their genre and disburse them to their Readers. They will manage their Readers, and be responsible for getting publication-worthy pieces selected, ordered by preference, and submitted to the EiC and the AEiC for final approval.

Readers – As many as are interested. Volunteers who read the submissions and rank the submissions. They answer to their Editor. Anyone can be a reader as well as hold any other position (except the Submissions Editor, since they might see information that may bias them), since nothing else is going on during the reading period.

Copy Editor: WORD – One or two. These people may put all of the EiC-accepted submissions into a single WORD document (or the EiC might do it), format it properly, perform basic copy edits (spelling, formatting, basic grammar—but nothing substantive), and submit to EiC & AEiC for layout approval. Prefer two, but one is sufficient.

Proofreader: PDF – One or two. Initially, will be the same as the WORD Copy Editor. These people will take the final EiC-approved WORD version and turn it into a publishable PDF, and do final copy editing run through. Once it’s finalized, the EiC will sign off on it. Again, prefer two, but one is sufficient.

Design & Production Editor – This person will handle the design and production of the journal, including cover design, any graphics inside the journal (so will work with Copy Editor), compile, organize, design, and get the final EiC-approved version to press.

Web & Social Media Chief – This person will operate the TR website. If WW already has a webmaster and would prefer, we can just use that person. Will be responsible for putting new issues up on website, updating submission dates and issue themes, putting up any web-only pieces, updating submission guidelines, and running TR’s social media sites (FB, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).
